34th Annual Porta Westfalica Festival Set for June 17

Sister Cities of Portaloo, the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, and Waterloo Lions are busy making plans for the 34th annual Porta Westfalica festival, scheduled for Tuesday, June 17th at the Monroe County Courthouse grounds in downtown Waterloo. Bill Getchman, President of Sister Cities – Portaloo, is this year’s Grand Marshall.

The festivities begin at 4pm with inflatables for the children, booths, music, great food, and domestic and German beer and wine.

The parade begins at 6 pm, beginning at Gibault Catholic High School on Columbia Avenue, traveling East to Main Street, turning South and traveling to the corner of Main and 3rd Street.

Musical Entertainment includes the New Hanover Deutchmeisters, 4 – 6 p.m. on the Courthouse grounds, the Bud Light Brigade (following the parade until 7:30 p.m.) at the bandstand, the Waterloo Municipal Band, 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the bandstand, and the Waterloo German Band, 8:30 – 10:30 p.m., on Main Street in front of Subliminal.

Sign-ups begin at 8:15 p.m. for the Strong Arm contest, which will be held at 8:30 p.m. in front of the Waterloo German Band float. There will be a men’s and a women’s contest. Cost to participate is $5. The winner will receive a $25 Chamber of Commerce gift certificate and bragging rights!

Enjoy great food, including BBQ Pork Steaks and brats, Ribeyes, Potato Pancakes with applesauce, Funnel Cakes, pretzels, and SO MUCH MORE!!

Sample an assortment of wine and beer in the beautiful wine and beer garden. Both domestic and German varieties are available. Last call is 10 p.m.

Children will enjoy a large variety of inflatable rides and games, set up on Mill Street.  Ride armbands are available for advance purchase at the area banks and Schnucks for $12. Armbands provide unlimited access to the inflatables for the entire evening, and will also be available for purchase for $15 on the evening of the festival. Individual ride tickets are $3 each.

The Porta Westfalica festival is a wonderful Waterloo tradition, established in 1980. Bring your lawn chairs and join us!
